I am interested in the ways that bodies interact with their environments, and furthermore, how they deal with unprecedented changes. I wonder how an onslaught of events such as seasons of trauma and growth, healing and adaptation, and technological advancements can affect one’s body physically, mentally and spiritually. I have become increasingly curious about how humans interact through various networks, ranging from intimate exchanges to impersonal modes of communication and staging. My work explores contrasting narratives, juxtaposing my own lived experiences with that of stories portrayed in televised news and social media platforms. My objective is to portray these narratives in a playful manner that is invitational, empathetic and engaging with viewers.
I hope that viewers find my art work relatable so that they can find layered meaning and perhaps some comical relief. I love working in a variety of media including, but not limited to-- mixed media sculpture, ceramic sculpture, painting, drawing, fashion design, and site specific installation. Diving into a variety of techniques and materials speaks to my obsession with craft and experimentation. I enjoy using repetitive lines to create delicate systematic webs, as well as whimsical compositions that vibrate with bright bursts of saturated color and blurred organic shapes. My work strives to be intimate, and perhaps that is why I have become interested in clothing. I enjoy the tactile experience of fabric. I see garments as sculptural objects that wrap closely around the body as both physical and emotional extensions of oneself. This is interesting to me in part because I think that my work seeks to understand my own body in reaction to my surroundings. Though I am often frustrated as a spectator in a broken world, my ultimate hope is to bring joy into my art, even when dealing with serious topics. Experiencing my art is to confront distorted issues to ultimately transform them into an approachable encounter. |
